Our Beliefs

Saint Paul summarized what WELS believes in 1 Corinthians 1:23.

“We preach Christ crucified…”

A simple statement to say, but a complex notion to fathom. The implications of Christ’s crucifixion to save all of us resonate through the centuries, to our time and beyond. It is because of His sacrifice that we strive to live in His word through literal and historical interpretations of the Bible and of the teachings of Martin Luther.

The idea of Christ’s crucifixion should not bring us woe. On the contrary! We are imperfect and undeserving of God’s love, but because of His son’s atoning sacrifice, we have the ultimate reprieve. With Jesus’ victory over even death, God’s covenant to all of His children was kept. That brings us the greatest joy of all!

As God’s children, we strive to love our fellow man as He and Jesus taught us to do. Through ministry and outreach, we share this love and the Word with the world. We share the story of Jesus in the hopes that others will take heart in knowing Him and following His path. We extend our fellowship so that all may find comfort and peace in the world.

Yes, “Christ crucified” may be the simplest way to describe our beliefs, but what it represents is far more complex, and far more rewarding.
